Fall Nurturing And Pampering For Your Skin

Fall is THE season to deeply care for your skin and do a more thorough nurturing and pampering because it's the season of Metal, the most subtle of the Five Elements in the Traditional Chinese Medicine theory (see our Fall Detox article). Find out the best strategies and recipes to purify, nurture and regenerate your skin for more beauty, radiance and glamour.

The Skin as the Third Lung

The skin is one of your biggest organ and its qualities and properties are many, but the name given by the Chinese says it all: they call it the Third Lung. This makes a lot of sense as the Metal element drives the Lungs, the Large Intestine and the Skin. All three organs are involved in taking in something vital and letting go of toxins and waste:
  • For the Lungs: oxygen in/ CO2 out
  • For the Large Intestine: water and electrolytes in/ waste out
  • For the Skin: oxygen, nutrients and sunlight in/ toxins out
skinYour skin is so sensitive to your general health and particularly your digestive and respiratory health because the three organ systems are connected and interdependent. However, as these three organs are connected, by rebalancing and nurturing your skin you will not only be more beautiful, radiant and glamorous but you will also have a positive invigorating action on your Lungs and Large Intestine. Your skin breathes, so help it to breathe better and more easily by avoiding chemical body care and tight outfits.

Your skin is the body factory for Vitamin D that is now in the spotlight of medical and scientific studies as doctors are discovering that a vast majority of the population is Vitamin D deficient. Vitamin D protects you against a great number of diseases like cancer, S.A.D. depression and the flu (just to name a few)! Learn more about the importance of letting your skin breathe and get some sun in our summer blog about fresh air and sun.

Our Fall Detox article gives you guidelines to take care of your beauty and health from within. Here are now the exclusive beauty strategies from without.

Pampering strategies for a youthful, radiant and glamorous skin

Given that Fall is the Season of Metal, which is the energy supporting your skin, whatever you do this Fall for your skin will have a more powerful and deeper beautifying effect on your skin and beauty. You don't need to believe in anything, for it to work: just go with the flow of the season and have fun pampering yourself!

Your skin needs to replenish and regenerate after the summer of sunbathing and outdoors activities, like the beach or the hiking, biking or gardening and maybe the overload of barbecued meat and beer. This is a good time to introduce some healthy and anti-aging changes in your beauty routine.

Aromatic Facial Steam Bath for deep cleansing

What you will need:
  • a bowl of boiling water
  • a towel
  • essential oils chose according to your skin (see below)
BathEvery dermatologist will tell you that serious sweating deeply cleans the skin. A steam bath stimulates the blood flow under your skin, opens up your pores and washes out more dirt, debris, dead skin cells and toxins. The heat also opens up your veins bringing more oxygen and nutrients to your skin surface for better nourishment.

Steam treatments are extremely easy to do at home. All you need is a bowl of boiling water, a towel. Put your chosen essential oils on the surface of the water and cover your head with the towel, making sure the sides are closed. Because it's really hot and your head is under a towel, you may need to come out to breathe every so often. Make the Facial Steam Bath last at least 5 min.

Which essential oils do you need for your skin type?

  • Normal skin: Lemon, Lavender or Neroli (Orange Blossom)
  • Dry skin: Roman or German Chamomile, Rose, Palma Rosa or Rosewood
  • Oily skin: Clary Sage, Thyme linalol, Juniper or Grapefruit
  • Acne or Blemished skin: Roman or German Chamomile, Clary Sage, Thyme linalol or Lavender

Warning: You should not have a Steam Bath if you have broken veins, hypersensitive skin or inflammation of any type including sunburn. If you have allergy to essential oils, you can just put a handful of Rose petals in the bowl of water. It will be extremely soothing.

A Facial Steam Bath is extremely purifying, regenerating and toning. After the Steam Bath, refresh your skin with lots of cold water. Your skin feels soft, smooth and refreshed. Time for the regenerating mask now...

If you have ever been told that pampering yourself and spending time for your beauty is only vanity, please thrash this non-sense (unless you spend all your time in front of the mirror or under the knife of the cosmetic surgeon in which case, this is vanity)! Natural Beauty and health are the two faces of the same coin, nothing else, nothing more. Natural is a keyword here, as there is always a price to pay for anything unnatural and artificial. Work with your skin, not against it and you will see wonders appear before your eyes.
